Going back in Win 98 - After you cracked it :)
==============================================
<<<<For Newbeis>>>>

I admit and you "confess" that you can't start your Windows 98, it is giving away some kewl VXD or "Error at 0993859:096884" error. Before you get that Windows 98 CD from the shelf, or borrow it from your friend if you are using a pirated version lets get our hands dirty.
First thing first, turn that computer "ON". Now as its doing those internal RAM counts and keyboard
checking (some people says this process POST, I wondered why POST as we can't put our letters anywhere until I knew that it stands for Power On Self Test) Hold on your breaths, the screen blinks hold your breath and the CTRL key simultaneously, dont miss. Yes good, you did it, some funky menu as if your monitor gone black and white, choose the Option 5 to start in MS-Dos mode.
Techies jump here: Start your computer in MS-Dos mode.
Type Scanreg/restore next to the command prompt (viz. "C:\>" with no quotes) Good, some blue screen programs pops us displaying a list of files like RB0001.DAT RB0002.DAT etc with their date and time when they were created. Choose the file name keeping the date in mind assuming how much back in the time you wanna travel. Here's the time-machine they wanted to always discover! Oh now, leave that CTRL key, why are you holding it still?
Techies jump here: Scanreg stands for MS Registry Checker, this is the DOS version of the window registry checker scanregw. You can backup, restore, optimize your registry here. Here's how.
- ** Type Scanreg /backup to back up your registry.
- ** Type Scanreg /restore to restore (already explained)
- ** Type Scanreg /opt to optimize (be sure to backup first, never trust W******)
- ** Type Scanreg /Fix to correct any error in the registry.
Done, the program and I am asking you to beleive in both of us and restart. Happily, Windows 98 will start up. If you changed your wallpaper recently it would be back to what it was that day. The next bad thing is if you installed any software in this time period they may behave strangely. Anyway, start tweaking again with a good spirit now. You have a program to back you up.
