Before uploading web-site, check
this list!
It is truly said
and experienced that the last 10% of your web-site designing takes
almost the same time as the first
90%. A good site is always under construction, that doesn’t mean that
you should keep your web-site in your local hard-disk all the time, you
have to upload it to the web-server you so keenly registered. As a law
of physics there is no hundred percent efficient machine, may be your
web-site isn’t 100% optimized either but its time for you to upload,
so before you get your cigar and start uploading, here is few checklist
that you should follow. 1. Broken Links:
Nothing is more irritating then broken links, use your designer software
Frontpage or Dreamwaver or what-ever you used to check whether any file
or graphic link is missing. I put stress on this point do check this. No
broken links anywhere. 2. Image Alt tag:
Do put the image description or the keywords if you are search engine
conscious in the image tag. This is important at least to
the images which are at least linking the web-page to some other
page. 3. Link Check: I
know you aren’t going to do this but it happens sometimes, some images
or text stating Click Me and no hyperlink active in them. Have a look at
your web-site and be sure there isn’t anything of this sort. 4. Meta Tags: 35%
of the web-pages of your competitor make no use of the important meta
tags such as keywords or description, God knows why but you can claim a
better position in all search engines by making use of meta tags. Use
them on each page! Go ahead, do it now. 5. ASP/Database:
When you load your web-site be sure you load the global.asp and your
database files as well. Automatic uploading programs wont make such
errors but if you are using your FTP program make sure you do justice
with them too. 6. Cgi-Bin : Your perl scripts or the CGI EXE must be placed in
the cgi-bin folder at the root. Place it anywhere else and it would be
downloaded for the user in his hard-disk and your web-site will still be
asking subscribe to my news-letter. 7. Hard Linking:
That’s a mistake, never make linking like http://somewhere.com/images/shadow.gif
use instead ./images/shadow.gif that way when you change your
domain-name you don’t have to edit all those web-pages again. Use
relative linking as explained above. 8. Speed: A web-site when uploaded from the local hard-disk to
the web-server may no longer be the same in speed; heavy graphics and
background music is not good always. If you have to use them always use
the ALT tags. If you are showing a flash intro have a link to
‘skip’. 9. Inter house
linking: This is important, all of your web-pages must be linked to each
other. Though it isn’t necessary to link all of them to one index
page, it may have a tree structure one page linking to another two page
and the two page linking to another four pages. This is important for
search engine robots, which crawl page to page with the links that you
have provided. 10. Spelling/Grammer:
Check spelling and grammatical errors in your web-pages. It is ok to do
regional justice like Indians write colour and Americans color but no
one writes colur! 11. Terms &
Conditions: Read the terms & conditions of the web-server you are
loading to, if it’s a free service make no mistakes they will kick
your web-site out for a single mistake.
