Volumes could be written about search engine optimization and I know I ain’t wrong stating that volumes have been written about this topic. So I ain’t going to add to that volume but instead here I am mentioning few tips & technique that works to boost your search engine position but which you occasionally ignore.

1. <ALT> The Alt tag for images have you ever given attention to this. Lets be precise first for what they were meant for (when developed). Many of the internet user who are connected to a slow line usually disable the feature to display images in the web-page. This of course increases there browsing speed. So what happens to the images is that the text which is put in the ALT tab is displayed. One more use is that when a user point its holy mouse pointer to an image, the text in the Alt tag is shown as tool tip. So this is the use, now let us use it to increase our search engine position. In the alt tag, (for all the images in your page) copy all keywords. That’s it. So simple!

An example here:<IMG height=112 alt="shareaware, freeware, downloads, free" src="logo.gif" width=588>

Another example: Open just any of your competitor web-site and view its source code!

2. My Head…Heading: I never understand why, why people ignore the <H1>, <H2>, <H3> and so heading tags and replace them by just increasing the font size. Never do it again for the sake of your search engine position. When ever possible use these tags freely as long as it didn’t give a bad taste for your web-site look.

3. Spelling Mistakes: Your English teacher will get mad at me because I am asking you to make spelling mistakes. Well, before you hit the close button, let me tell you what I am trying to speak so firmly about. Tell me how website is written, web-site? web site? website? I am asking you to add some common spelling mistakes to your keyword list. Use plurals, synonyms to add variation to your web page. For a search engine good, better and best are three different keywords.

4. File Name: With Windows 95 came the concept of long file names, why are you still sticking with the old 8.3? Why? Again for the sake of search engine positioning use filenames such as submit_shareware.htm instead of subshare.htm The same applies to folder names (not to speak domain names, images file name). If you are really keen about search engine ranking, put your keyword in, there is a middle ground between forcibly getting in and adjusting try it.

An example:
<A href="http://www.dragon-download.com/downloads/graphich-software.htm"> Graphich Software</A>

A common mistake, using “click me” to link to your page. Use a part of the title or the page keywords for the link.

5. Linking: Why should I throw away my visitors and possibly my potential buyer to other sites. Do it, for search engines! Offer link exchange and link to the sites which link back to you. The more sites you link to the better position your site will have in the search engines. The best that you can do is

  • Open the links in a new window i.e. using target = “_blank” in your <A> tag.
  • Don’t place the links at the home page, put a section like My Links or My Affiliates and put those links there.
  • See which links work, and which don’t with your site statistic, remove the site links which don’t bring any traffic to your site. Even one click daily is affordable.
  • Be targeted as much as you can.

These were the tips you may use to enhance your search engine ranking. At the time of writing this article these tips weren’t considered illegal by the search engines. Please, read the search engine documentation before applying these tips. Play fare, have a successful web-business. Comment back at zeeshan@konzoo.com
